Potterhouse School Clubs

Potterhouse School holds clubs every Monday afternoon. This creates opportunities for students to broaden their experience, skills and knowledge, and to develop community.

 Students enrol in a club at the beginning of every term. They choose from one of the 29 clubs available. The clubs available this term are listed below with an explanation about each one, as well as the cost, where applicable.

Clubs Coordinator: Mr David Kamotho

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art, characterized by its emphasis on head-height kicks, jumping and spinning kicks, and fast kicking techniques. It offers students an opportunity to be energized, meditate, improve their focus, and build discipline.

Dance mainly focuses on nurturing, enhancing and exploiting dance talent in children. Potterhouse School boasts a music and dance culture, evident from our reputation in musical theatre. The club enables students to learn dance basics and choreographies that in turn develop personal traits such as confidence, creativity and teamwork.

With the pace of life in the 21st century, competency in the kitchen has become a rare quality, especially among children. At the same time, they are bombarded with unhealthy food options as the best things to eat. The aim of cookery club is to give children a solid foundation in the understanding of food. The club has a two-fold approach; 1) Teaching children the basics of good nutrition and how to pick out healthy foods 2) Teaching children to cook meals for themselves and their families.

Numerous studies have shown that chess has a positive impact on the mental growth of children through improved memory, visualization, calculation and concentration. The club is offered to the children by Mini Chess Kenya, an organization that seeks to empower children by training them in chess. The club will equip students with the skills necessary for chess and increase their competitive ability and teamwork through in-house and inter-school tournaments. It also promotes self-discipline.

Creativity is a wild mind and a disciplined eye. Robotics Club students use Lego™ sets to create robots, simple working machines and advanced working machines. There are different Lego sets that are suitable for different age groups. Young age groups start with simple working machines while older age groups advance to the Mind Storms™ set which offers a chance to program the robots. Students in this club also learn core values like respect and teamwork which will help them in the future.

Monkeynastix is a physical education program that uses creativity and movement to achieve physical development goals for children ages 1-8 years. Monkeynastix offers three separate curriculums for ages 1-2, 3-6 and 7-8. A Monkeynastix session includes warm-up to music, stretch and tone, and working with specialized, age appropriate equipment.  The session is fun packed to ensure that the children enjoy themselves as they learn and exercise.

Ballet is an artistic dance form performed to music, using precise and highly formalized set steps and gestures. Many young dancers long to slip into their tutus for the first time, and try on a perfect pair of ballet slippers. But the benefits of enrolling your young dancer into a ballet class goes beyond just how cute they’ll look in a tutu. Ballet offers an opportunity for students to gain confidence, improve posture and coordination, enhance their focus, increase flexibility, improve general health and give them a chance to bond.

Inline roller skating is an activity that is great for increasing stamina, burning calories and improving balance. It offers a skill that enables one to easily participate in other forms of skating such as ice skating. And the best part – it is fun!

It takes a certain level of fine motor skills for a child to string beads. In Beading Club, students get to build their creativity, improve their motor fine motor skills, in-hand manipulation skills, increase their concentration, coordination and visual perception skills, and build their cognitive skills, such as planning. Children who participate in Beading Club have shown improved handwriting as well as pencil handling skills in coloring and writing activities.

Swimming in Potterhouse School is one of the most popular extra-curricular activities and its popularity has increased with our heated pool. Swimming is an excellent form of low-impact cardiovascular exercise for the whole body. Parents enroll their children for swimming lessons for various reasons including: exercise, development of strong bones and muscles, promotion of flexibility and co-ordination, self-confidence and other life skills, as well as fun and enjoyment.

Potterhouse School’s Umbro Soccer Club is a soccer club that aims to helps kids stay fit and healthy. Playing soccer provides exercise that improves cardiovascular health, increases coordination, improves strength and enhances flexibility.  It also builds on the teamwork skill in students. Soccer players have to work together as a team in order to be successful, which in turn enhances social interactions.

In the German Club the students learn basic approaches to the German language based on the textbook “Der grüne Max” (“The green Max”) on the A1 language level. Particular focus is not only given to the logical structure of the learning process, the pronunciation and grammar but children are also supported in developing a feeling for this foreign language. Taking into consideration specific interests of the children, the facilitator also includes topics where the teaching material is uniquely developed (CDs, books, EURO coins etc.). Different types of learners will enjoy the classes.

In Potterhouse we believe environmental education connects us to the world around us, teaching us about both natural and built environments. We bring nature into the classroom, take students outside to learn, or find impromptu teachable moments on a nature walk. Imagination, enthusiasm and healthy lifestyles are encouraged in the club. Responsible action is also taken to better the environment of our school.

The junior golf team in Potterhouse School uses golf to firmly establish good attitude and life skills in the students. We offer a remarkable growth and monitor children’s progress by coaching them to participate in junior tournaments in the country and abroad.

We take them through the following levels:

A: level 1

B: level 2

C: level 3

These levels teach them the following: Introduction to golf, safety, gripping and etiquette, putting forms, setup and putting stroke.

Our lessons are taught in a language that is simple for all children to understand.

Sign language is a visual language of communication that uses hands (not based on sound) and is mostly used by deaf people. Sign language gives your child an opportunity to learn about and appreciate diversity in the world. It also allows them to play a part in making the world a better place for deaf people, because they can interact with deaf people and that gives any deaf person an opportunity to be part of the society. In addition, just like they learn any other language, learning basic sign language skills will expose students to diverse ways of communication. The course includes interactive sessions with deaf children from various backgrounds, trips and participation in activities that creates awareness about deaf people.

Hair and Beauty Club was created for young girls as a form of empowerment. It believes in the well being of the girl child. The club teaches young girls various beauty regimes and how to take care of themselves through good grooming and hygiene. It also teaches girls basic hair styling, plaiting, braiding or weaving techniques.

We create productions for children and provide drama training and theatre making opportunities for students in Potterhouse School. We provide opportunities for our students to participate in presenting and making theatre as actors, stage managers, directors and technical operator. Our school workshops emphasize team work; create expressions, inspiration, laughter, exploration and individual discipline to achieve a personal aim or the group’s common goal in telling stories that reflect their lives.

Tennis in Potterhouse School seeks to empower children through sports and developing sporting abilities. We coach children and use the sport to educate them on fundamental life values while promoting good character and teamwork. We also organize fun-filled and objective tournaments for beginners and advanced players, where children from different clubs and schools meet to compete and make new friends. This also helps them in goal setting, coping with failure and persevering.

Careers in aviation are extremely rewarding.  In the Aviation Club we teach and train our children in aviation. We also have interactive sessions with the guardians/parents of Aviation Club members to enhance their knowledge so as to inform them about schools to apply for, duration of training, costs, which government bodies examine, and types of licenses and certifications. Students also get opportunities to visit different hangers and interact with airplanes, pilots and other professionals.

Media Club is a place for students who have an interest in photography, filming, radio, TV, social media marketing and management, journalism, advertising and YouTube blogging. Students are given the opportunity to develop their skills through training programs such as shooting and editing music videos, TV shows, adverts, short films, radio indents etc. The students get to learn more by visiting television and radio stations. The media club seeks to nurture creatives that the school can work with in covering school events and various projects.

Scouting is all about building confidence and self-esteem, learning important life skills and leadership skills, team building, outdoor adventure, education, and fun! Scouts learn how to make good choices and to take responsibility for their actions so that they are prepared for their adult life as independent people. They also learn how to be self-starters. Students also participate in camps and many outdoor activities.

In Potterhouse School we have introduced the 1st 5 devotions as a way for children to learn the Word of God. With this we have seen children improve on their understanding of Christianity and the Word of God. The Christian faith is the foundation of Potterhouse School and at its heart. Children who are in Bible Club get to play and have fun learning the Word of God with lively activities and fun games, which also incorporate the 1st 5 devotions.

In Potterhouse School we believe that children who read often and widely get better every day. We have noticed that reading improves concentration, teaches children about the world around them, and improves vocabulary and language skills. And above all reading is fun. That is what Library Club is all about.

We all want our children to be happy, healthy, and physically fit. As busy as we are, it’s important to find time to help children develop good habits that contribute to a lifelong focus on wellness. In the Nature Club we love to see children developing inquisitive minds. We have activities like: building with and digging in dirt, watching worms wriggle through the soil, smelling fresh-cut grass, constructing things with twigs and mud.

Play Craft Club allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength. Play Craft Club is important to healthy brain development. They use a range of play activities from water to play dolls to play dough, as well as picture making, colouring and other creative activities.

The President’s Award-Kenya, is an exciting self-development programme available to all young people countrywide, equipping them with positive life skills to make a difference for themselves, their communities, country and the world. It was launched in 1966 by the Founding Father of the nation, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta. As Potterhouse School we agree with the core values of the President’s Award. It exists to develop and deliver quality experiential activities that impart positive life skills and ethical values to young people for a better society.

Potterhouse School has a unique Advanced Swim Training programme. Dolphins swimming club provides a competitive aquatic program, through a challenging, fun and caring environment; whilst promoting goal setting, life skills and sportsmanship. The swimming club is not only available to Potterhouse pupils but we have opened the door to anyone who wishes to join the training.

Dolphins swimming club will guide swimmers through a Long Term Athlete Development Plan (LTAD) with a vision to competing at NCSA, KSF and eventually INTERNATIONAL levels of competition. A seasonal/termly training fee of Ksh.18,000 will be charged and Ksh. 11,000 for the half season.

We aim to: Enhance and promote Advanced Swim Training in Kenya, Develop and guide athletes to their full potential & actively support the pursuit of excellence. Athletes in the Swim Team are encouraged to improve their disciplines through our unique team spirit. We aim to maximize potential and assist the athletes to pursue high levels of achievement by encouraging them to reach National and International levels of competition. We also strive to provide coaching and facilities beyond that which other clubs and schools in Kenya can offer.

It must be recognized that external factors can influence the development of any of these qualities either positively or negatively. The support given and the commitment shown by a swimmer’s parents will greatly influence a swimmer’s development and his/her eventual success. Key stage1 to Year 2 will have their swimming training from 1.05pm to 2.05pm.Swimmers from Year 3 to Year 11 start their training at 3.45 pm and finish at 5.00 pm.

Swimming days are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday. We have also introduced morning sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday from 6.45 am to 7.50 am.

All payments should be made to Potterhouse School before commencing the programme. Please sign up by filling the slip below and return it to the swim coaches.

If your child is interested in taking music instrumental lessons please complete and return the consent form below by Friday 18th January 2019.

The lessons will only start after payment confirmation and receipt of the signed consent form.

The amount is ksh 12,500 for 10 individual lessons that run throughout the term.
